Sustainability — Brisbane to Komodo’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

At Brisbane to Komodo, we believe that the privilege of experiencing one of the world’s most pristine natural environments comes with a profound responsibility to protect it. Our philosophy is rooted in the Indonesian concept of Tanggung Jawab—responsibility and accountability. We are committed to a model of tourism that not only minimizes its footprint but actively contributes to the conservation of the Komodo ecosystem and the well-being of its local communities. Our sustainability policy is a core pillar of our operations, not an afterthought.

Environmental Commitments

We are dedicated to preserving the delicate marine and terrestrial biodiversity of the Komodo National Park for generations to come.

  • Carbon Offset Program: Air travel is a significant component of our journeys. We take this impact seriously. We partner with Gold Standard-certified programs to calculate and offset 100% of the carbon emissions for every private jet charter we facilitate between Brisbane and Labuan Bajo.
  • Marine Conservation Partnerships: A portion of every journey’s revenue is donated to our key conservation partners, including the Komodo Survival Program and The Nature Conservancy Indonesia. These funds support critical anti-poaching patrols, coral reef monitoring, and scientific research on manta ray and dragon populations.
  • Strict No Single-Use Plastic Policy: All our partner phinisis are contractually obligated to be free of single-use plastics. We provide all guests with reusable water bottles and utilize filtered water systems onboard. All provisions are sourced with minimal packaging.
  • Responsible Waste Management: We enforce a strict “pack it in, pack it out” policy. Our partner vessels are equipped with modern waste management and storage systems. All waste is disposed of responsibly at designated facilities in Labuan Bajo, and we never permit disposal at sea.
  • Reef-Safe Practices: We provide all guests with reef-safe sunscreen and educate them on responsible snorkeling and diving etiquette, such as maintaining neutral buoyancy and never touching coral or marine life, in line with guidelines from WWF Indonesia.

Community Commitments

Sustainable tourism must empower and benefit the local people who are the traditional stewards of this land and sea.

  • Local Employment & Fair Wages: We mandate that our phinisi partners maintain a crew of at least 80% Indonesian nationals, with a strong preference for hiring from local communities in Flores and the surrounding islands. We verify that all crew members are paid fair, living wages and receive benefits.
  • Supporting Local Economies: We prioritize sourcing from local suppliers. Fresh produce, fish, and other provisions for our liveaboards are purchased from the local markets in Labuan Bajo. Onboard amenities, such as hand-woven textiles, are sourced from artisan co-ops in villages like those in Sumba, providing direct economic benefit.
  • Community-Based Tourism Initiatives: Our itineraries include respectful, non-intrusive visits to local villages like Papagarang or Rinca, where guests can learn about traditional ways of life. We ensure that a portion of the fees paid goes directly to a community-managed fund.
  • The Juara Holding Community Fund: As part of our parent group’s commitment, a percentage of our annual profits is channeled into a dedicated fund that supports educational scholarships and healthcare infrastructure projects in the West Manggarai Regency, the administrative region for Komodo.

A journey with us is an investment in the future of Komodo. We are dedicated to proving that luxury travel and meaningful conservation can, and must, go hand in hand.

Safeguarding Komodo National Park’s vibrant ecosystems

Imagine diving into waters so clear, you can count the stripes on a clownfish darting through anemones, or witnessing a Komodo dragon emerge from the ancient forest, its gaze as old as time itself. This unparalleled access to a living wonder is a privilege Brisbane to Komodo cherishes, driving our commitment to not just observe, but actively protect and enhance the very environments and communities that make these journeys so extraordinary. Beyond minimizing our carbon footprint, our dedication to environmental stewardship extends to every facet of our operations within the Komodo National Park.

Onboard, we champion a rigorous “zero single-use plastic” policy, eliminating over 10,000 plastic water bottles
